Meet Miss Amy!

Amy Paulson has led the St. Michael’s Sunday School program for over 10 years, combining her experience as a Montessori teacher with her desire to spread the message of God. Lovingly called “Miss Amy” by the Sunday School children, Amy currently teaches in the Racine area in addition to planning weekly lessons for the children of St. Michael’s. She has a wealth of early childhood expertise as a Montessori teacher of over 20 years and she incorporates those methods into her teaching of the Bible for our Sunday School kids.

Our Classroom

The Sunday School room is filled with hands-on materials that Amy has curated intentionally to engage kids in the lessons each week. Kids are greeted by cozy carpet mats and beautifully-pained murals on the walls to immerse them into wonderfully sacred space for learning about God. They learn to sing songs and pray together as Miss Amy tells the Bible story each week, using figurines and hands-on materials to bring the stories to life. The Godly Play curriculum was chosen by Amy specifically because it combines hands-on activities with spiritual practice, helping children discover how God is present in their everyday lives. After the story, children are able to choose activities to extend their understanding in creative ways. Sometimes that may be drawing pictures or creating an art project to show what they learned. Other times, they may choose to play with the figures and “act out” the story. They may also choose to do a puzzle or play a game with others. Our program encourages kids to explore the Bible stories in a way that makes it exciting and relevant for them personally. Amy encourages parents and guardians to ask questions about what their children learned about in Sunday School and often provides take-home materials for families to continue the lessons beyond the Sunday School classroom. What to Expect

  • Kids are dropped off a few minutes before 9:30 service in the “undercroft,” which is a fancy way of saying downstairs. A greeter is waiting to meet the kids and restrooms are located near the space. Parents can go up to church and the Sunday School staff will return kids into the sanctuary right before Communion (they listen for it) and kids join in Communion.

  • All our childcare providers/sunday school providers are required to undergo Safe Church, Safe Communities training and a background check. This is true in all Episcopal Churches!

  • Our staff prioritize comfort, safety, and respect—so you can show up as you are and fully engage in the service as a parent.

  • We do take photographs, but will only post or share with parental written consent! Our children’s safety is paramount. Please share any concerns with our staff.

  • Any child attending a St. Michael’s Mass is invited to participate in Sunday School during the 9:30 service. The only requirement is that they be potty-trained so they are able to use the nearby restrooms on their own if needed. Most children who participate are between the ages of 4 and 10, but all are welcome!
